How Facebook Dating Works
Facebook Dating is a feature within the Facebook app that allows users to create a separate dating profile.
When connected to their main Facebook account. Here’s how it generally works:
Opting in: Users who are interested in using Facebook Dating must opt in to the service within the Facebook mobile app. It’s not automatically enabled.
Creating a profile: Once opted in, users can create a separate dating profile. This profile is distinct from their regular Facebook profile and is not visible to their Facebook friends unless they specifically choose to share it.
Setting preferences: Users can set preferences for potential matches, including things like age range, distance, gender identity, and other criteria.
Matching: Facebook Dating uses the information from users’ profiles, such as their interests, events they’ve attended, groups they’re part of, and other data points to match them with potential dates. It also suggests matches based on mutual friends, which is intended to add a layer of trust to the matching process.
Communication: If two users mutually like each other, they are notified of the match and can start communicating through the messaging feature within the Facebook Dating interface. This messaging is separate from regular Facebook Messenger.
Safety features: Facebook Dating has several safety features built in, including the ability to share details of upcoming dates with trusted friends or family members, as well as a feature called “Secret Crush” where users can select up to nine of their Facebook friends that they’re interested in romantically. If those friends also opt into Secret Crush and add the user to their list, both parties are notified of the match.
How is Facebook Dating different from Facebook?
- Although you access Dating from your Facebook account, your Dating profile is different from your Facebook profile. Your current Facebook friends and anyone outside of Dating can’t see your Dating profile. For example, your Dating activities don’t appear on your Facebook Feed.
- All conversations you have in Dating are separate from your conversations on Facebook Messenger.
- You can delete your Dating profile without deleting your Facebook account. However, deleting your Facebook account also deletes your Dating profile.
